HYPERTHYROIDISM SHORT NOTES
- Hypersecretion of T3 and T4
CAUSES
- Malignancy of thyroid gland and TSH producing cells of anterior pituitary gland
- Graves disease (Diffuse toxic goiter)
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Goiter and exophthalmos (proptosis, protruding eyeball)
- Tachycardia, hypertension, palpitation, Heat intolerance, weight loss, soft skin and hair, diarrhea, mood swing
DIAGNOSIS
- Increased level of T3 and T4 in blood
- Decreased level of TSH in blood
TREATMENT FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM
- Administer anti-thyroid medication like propylthiouracil
- Provide adequate rest
- Provide a cool environment
- provide high calorie diet
- Administer iodine preparation that inhibit the release of thyroid hormone
- Administer propranolol for tachycardia
- Prepare the client for radioactive iodine therapy to destroy thyroid cells
- Prepare the client for thyroidectomy
