HYPERTHYROIDISM SHORT NOTES

  • Hypersecretion of T3 and T4

CAUSES

  • Malignancy of thyroid gland and TSH producing cells of anterior pituitary gland
  • Graves disease (Diffuse toxic goiter)

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Goiter and exophthalmos (proptosis, protruding eyeball)
  • Tachycardia, hypertension, palpitation, Heat intolerance, weight loss, soft skin and hair, diarrhea, mood swing

DIAGNOSIS

  • Increased level of T3 and T4 in blood
  • Decreased level of TSH in blood

TREATMENT FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM

  • Administer anti-thyroid medication like propylthiouracil
  • Provide adequate rest
  • Provide a cool environment
  • provide high calorie diet
  • Administer iodine preparation that inhibit the release of thyroid hormone
  • Administer propranolol for tachycardia
  • Prepare the client for radioactive iodine therapy to destroy thyroid cells
  • Prepare the client for thyroidectomy
