DIABETIC INSIPIDUS SHORT NOTES

  • Hypo secretion of Anti-diuretic hormone

CAUSES

  • Stroke, trauma
  • Inadequate amount of Anti-diuretic hormone in the body
  • Failure of the kidney to respond to antidiuretic hormone
  • Kidney tubule fails to reabsorb water in absence of ADH
  • Idiopathic
  • Effects of certain drugs like lithium and demeclocycline

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Excretion of large amount of dilute urine
  • Polydipsia, dehydration, inability to concentrate urine
  • Low urine specific gravity, muscle pain
  • Headache, postural hypotension, tachycardia

HOW TO DIAGNOSE

  • Urine specific gravity less than 1.006(normal urine specific gravity is 1.016 to 1.026)

TREATMENT

  • Monitor vital signs
  • Monitor safe environment for patient with postural hypotension
  • Monitor electrolyte values
  • Monitor client intake of adequate fluids
  • Monitor intake and output, weight, osmolality and specific gravity of urine
  • Instruct the client to avoid foods or liquids that produce diuresis
  • Administer vasopressin tannate or desmopressin acetate as prescribed
