DIABETIC INSIPIDUS SHORT NOTES
- Hypo secretion of Anti-diuretic hormone
CAUSES
- Stroke, trauma
- Inadequate amount of Anti-diuretic hormone in the body
- Failure of the kidney to respond to antidiuretic hormone
- Kidney tubule fails to reabsorb water in absence of ADH
- Idiopathic
- Effects of certain drugs like lithium and demeclocycline
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Excretion of large amount of dilute urine
- Polydipsia, dehydration, inability to concentrate urine
- Low urine specific gravity, muscle pain
- Headache, postural hypotension, tachycardia
HOW TO DIAGNOSE
- Urine specific gravity less than 1.006(normal urine specific gravity is 1.016 to 1.026)
TREATMENT
- Monitor vital signs
- Monitor safe environment for patient with postural hypotension
- Monitor electrolyte values
- Monitor client intake of adequate fluids
- Monitor intake and output, weight, osmolality and specific gravity of urine
- Instruct the client to avoid foods or liquids that produce diuresis
- Administer vasopressin tannate or desmopressin acetate as prescribed
