CUSHING SYNDROME SHORT NOTES

Excessive Secretion Of Glucocorticoid Secretion Caused By Increase Amount Of ACTH Secreted By The Pituitary Gland.

It Is A Metabolic Disorder.

CAUSES

  • Tumor Of Adrenal Cortex
  • Over Production Of ACTH from Pituitary
  • Administration Of Large Doses Of Glucocorticoids.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Moon Face, Buffalo Hump, Supraclavicular Fat Pad, Thin Extremities, Truncal Obesity, Hanging Abdomen.
  • Hyperglycemia, Hypernatremia, Hypokalemia, Hypocalcemia, Hypertension,
  • Weight Gain, Hirsutism, Fragile Skin, Reddish Purple Straie On The Abdomen And Upper Thighs.

TREATMENT:

  • Monitor Vital Signs,
  • Maintain Intake Output Chart,
  • Daily Weight Checking,
  • Check For Serum Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, And Glucose Daily,
  • Provide Meticulous Skin Care,
  • Administer Medication, That Inhibits Steroid Synthesis Like Mitotane And Trilostane.

SURGERY

  • Adrenalectomy For Adrenal Tumor
  • Trans-sphenoidal Hypophysectomy By Transnasal Endoscopy In Case Of Pituitary Tumour,
  • Check Nasal Drainage For Glucose To Check CSF Leakage
